Border between Ireland and UK is biggest block

suggested Mr Davis as a temporary replacement, adding: “Getting May out and him becoming an interim leader may be the only way to deliver Brexit and [a free trade deal].”

His allies said several Tory MPs have urged him to run for the leadership. Mr Davis is understood to be prepared to do so if there is a contest.

Four Cabinet Ministers are rumoured to be considering resigning, with speculation on Penny Mordaunt, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey. Scottish Secretary David Mundell and Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson could also quit.

In a letter to the PM, the pair said the integrity of the UK “remains the single most important issue for us” and indicated they will not tolerate Northern Ireland being treated differently from NADINE DORRIES MP BACKS EX-BREXIT SECRETARY FOR PM EU says checks are needed What is the biggest remaining issue? It’s the Northern Ireland backstop. Agreeing how to avoid a hard Irish border has proved difficult. What is the backstop? It is intended to be a temporary arrangement to ensure no return of a hard border while the sides negotiate a free trade deal. Why is a backstop needed? The EU says until there is a trade deal, checks on goods crossing to and from the UK will be needed to prevent exporters circumventing EU tariffs and controls. How would it work? Under the EU plan, Northern Ireland effectively would remain part of the single market and the customs union until a free trade deal is in place.

Why is that a problem for the UK? Theresa May wants to keep the whole of the UK aligned with the EU while a free trade agreement is negotiated. What is the sticking point? The UK says any deal should be time-limited. Why does May face a rebellion over the backstop? Tory Brexiteers fear she is preparing to give ground to secure agreement.
