Dog owners’ bonfire blues

Man hit by landslide is 3rd victim claimed by ferocious storm

HALF of dog owners dread Bonfire Night as their pet is distressed by the bangs.

A third have had to get it sedated or see a vet over its reaction to loud noises.

And more than a quarter (28%) have asked neighbours to stop letting off fireworks, home diffuser brand Adaptil’s poll found.

TV vet Cat Henstridge advised desensitising dogs.

She said: “Expose them to fireworks noises but at a very low level and, over time, slowly increase the volume if they are coping.” A MAN of 21 became Storm Callum’s third victim as he was killed in a mudslide on his way to work yesterday.

Corey Sharpling got off the bus he was on when a fallen tree forced it to stop.

He was calling bosses at McDonald’s at 5pm on Saturday to say he was running late when the steep-sided valley in Cwmduad, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, collapsed.

The landslide also carried a lorry into the River Duad but the driver swam to safety.

Local Huw Edwards, 60, said: “It’s a miracle the driver got out. Sadly, the man who got off the bus took the full brunt of the landslide and didn’t stand a chance.”

Corey’s death followed those of a 32-year- old man drowned in Penarth, near Cardiff, and a man swept into the sea in Brighton.

McDonald’s in Carmarthen closed its doors as a mark of respect to Corey. His girlfriend, Marsha Spittle, wrote on Facebook: “Today I lost the love of my life.”

Storm Callum came in from the Atlantic in the early hours of Friday with winds of up to 77mph and torrential rain. Hundreds of homes in the South West had power cuts and villages in Carmarthenshire and Powys had a month’s rain in 72 hours.
