Leader of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev is pictured on June 3, 1961 in Vienna, Austria, for talks with American President John F Kennedy. Known for his flamboyant style, Khrushchev unexpectedly announced his resignation 54 years ago today. He was the victim of a plot to oust him led by his successor Leonid Brezhnev, amid opposition to his failed domestic policies, problems with China and his humiliating climbdown over the Cuban Missile Crisis.
