According to a new survey, it’s your bank balance rather than your relationship that’s likely to suffer in the throws of a midlife crisis.

The poll, carried out by pension specialist Portafina, asked Brits to rate the top signs of a midlife crisis – and having an affair (42%) and splitting with a long-term partner (34%) rated highly.

However, when people who had actually had a crisis were quizzed, top of the list was booking an extravagant holiday (58%) and buying expensive clothes or accessories (56%).

Buying a car, renovating the house and buying a pricey gadget were also popular.
