What’s this pain in my ribs?

Symptoms:

You’ve developed chest pain close to your breastbone and your chest feels tender to touch. You’ve recently taken up weightlift­ing and you’ve been doing press ups each morning. You’re a smoker and you have a chronic smoker’s cough which has recently got worse. You have a fever, and pain on one side of your chest which is worse when you breathe deeply or cough.

You’re a fit man in your 20s and you’ve got a pain in one side of your chest which gets worse on movement and coughing. It seems to lie in the space between your ribs. You’re feverish and you’ve got a headache. It could be: Costochond­ritis, which can resemble a heart attack, and there’s often no known cause. It can be brought on by heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. It’s due to an inflammati­on in the cartilage where the ribs join the breastbone.

an inflammati­on in the covering of the lungs (pleura) and probably signifies you have an underlying lung infection.
