Wedding reflects badly on royals

-

■ I HAD to write and offer my sincere thanks to Kevin Maguire after reading his piece in Saturday’s Mirror. His words in highlighting the inequality of this country had me punching the air in total agreement. I’ve been an avid reader of his page for many years, but reading this condemnation of the evil class system that exists in the UK had me reaching for my keyboard.

Nothing brings this into sharper focus than the hullaballoo that surrounds every event involving the Royal Family. Why so many members of the working class get taken in by the royals is one of the great unexplained conundrums. Cliff Butler, Denton, Manchester

■ I am not a republican, but as an increasing amount of taxpayers’ money is being spent on the security and clean-up of royal weddings and increases to the civil list, I am gradually coming round to that view. I may be old-fashioned but I was always under the impression that the bride’s father paid for the wedding in its entirety. Should this not apply to the royal family as well?

■ There is no denying the controversy surrounding the wedding of Princess Eugenie, particularly regarding the security and policing of what turned out to be a comparatively small turnout.

But casting negative thoughts aside, there could be little doubt about the love shared by this couple. At times the look in Eugenie’s eyes was like an open window to her innermost thoughts, leaving us in no doubt as to her sheer love and admiration for her new husband.

B Smith, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

■ I am disgusted at the extortionate amount the taxpayers had to pay for the security and clean-up for Eugenie’s wedding. After all, she has a very wealthy father and has no official role. These funds could have been used to house many homeless people who are in dire need. I want control over how my taxes are spent.

A Labour government is sorely needed – and quickly.

Sandra Walter, South East London

■ I hope others didn’t watch the expensive farce of a royal wedding on Friday. It sticks in my throat that £2m was spent so Prince Andrew’s daughter could get married. The royals know how austerity has hit hard-working decent people in this country, but it seems they couldn’t care less. The sooner we get rid of these parasites the better.

Linda Martin, Witham, Essex

■ The £2 million for the security for the royal wedding of the Queen’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie is a drop in the ocean compared to the £18m for the security for President Trump’s three-day visit last July. Darren F Milner, Stoke-on-Trent

■ Many congratulations to Kevin Maguire for his outstanding article on the recent royal wedding. It was a brave and honest report on an event that revealed so much about the gap in life experiences between the privileged rich and those who struggle to provide for their own families amid the archaic class divide. Tremendous work. Well done to the Mirror for daring to voice reason in the face of such general sycophancy. Chris Martindale via email
