Tories do not care about poor’s pain

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ ESTHER McVey should either be sacked or made to resign from her position as Work and Pensions Secretary. On being asked by Labour MP Frank Field if she might like to speak to some of the young women who are resorting to prostitution to feed their children while waiting for their Universal Credit to be sorted out, she replied they should simply “get other jobs”, showing just how heartless she is (Mirror, October 16).

Does Ms McVey not know that most people on UC are actually in work? This system is not fit for purpose and she is not fit for her job. Mary Pester, Saltash, Cornwall

■ The Tories have been forced into a humiliating climbdown over Universal Credit. This comes after Labour MP for Birkenhead Frank Field told how some women had taken to the streets.

This country is being dragged back to the Victorian era under the Tories and the only way to change things for the better is to scrap Universal Credit and get rid of this elitist Tory government.

■ Esther McVey’s smugness in her handling of the Universal Credit debacle even eclipses that of her predecessor Iain Duncan Smith. She admits families will be hurt by the rollout of UC, then struts her stuff in expensive outfits without doing anything to help working families. We must support the Mirror’s campaign against Universal Credit cruelty.

■ Well done to Labour MP Frank Field for speaking on behalf of the women who have been forced into prostitution because they are facing destitution as a result of the rollout of Universal Credit.

Does Esther McVey not realise if these women felt able to apply for any of the 830,000 job vacancies she quotes, they would?

■ I signed your petition calling for an end to Universal Credit as, for the first time in my life, I need help. I have a job, but it’s a zerohours contract, the only one offered after a year of applying.

I’m 61 and one of the unlucky 1950s ladies who can’t retire until 66. I worked from 15 until four years ago when I had to become a fulltime carer for my dad.

I feel aggrieved I have to live on very little. I saved the Government money by caring for my dad at home and got no help.

■ Theresa May claiming the Tories are a party for everyone is a joke. It is too easy to say they don’t know how the hard-up are struggling over the Universal Credit fiasco. They do know, they just don’t care. Sheila Fox, Crawley West Sussex

■ Esther McVey has no idea of the current work climate or how hard life is for those on the minimum wage. Let her work for £7.83 an hour for six months instead of living the life of a pampered politician who got a 10% pay rise while the rest of us got austerity. M Armstrong, Durham

■ Well, Chris Evans has done it again – revealing the secrets of Doctor Who. He also revealed live on air the plot line for the new Mamma Mia! film. I was furious.

He has a big mouth and I, for one, will be glad when he leaves Radio 2. He’s too big for his boots. Denise Semmens Barnsley, South Yorks
