The United boss has until 6pm on Friday to respond to the charge and could be hit with a touchline ban if he pleads guilty.

It is alleged Mourinho, preparing for his return to former club Chelsea on Saturday, said “fodas filhos de puta” - Portuguese for “f**k off sons of b ***** s” – into a BT Sport camera.

The FA are understood to have brought in lip readers to ascertain precisely what Mourinho said before deciding to charge the 55-year-old. A statement from the FA said: “It is alleged that his language was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. He has until 6pm on 19 October to respond.”
