Tories’ credit cover-up

Labour bid to see files on impact of benefit voted down in House

- BY ANDREW GREGORY Political Editor andrew.gregory@mirror.co.uk

TORY MPs last night voted to “cover up” documents showing the suffering universal credit will cause millions of claimants.

A “humble address” motion by Labour had tried to force the release of “any briefing papers or on the impact of universal credit on recipients”.

The move – under a Commons rule in which the Queen would be asked to tell ministers to comply with the result, making it binding – was voted down 299 to 279.

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Margaret Greenwood said: “The Tories voted to shame-analysis... fully cover up the impact universal credit is having. This is causing chaos and misery, but this Government is refusing to come clean.”

Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey insisted they had a “mature approach” and the rollout of the system would continue.

More than 30,000 have signed the Mirror’ petition to scrap UC.
