£600m deal for Wembley falls through
SAVED Wembley Stadium BILLIONAIRE Shahid Khan yesterday withdrew his £600million bid to buy Wembley Stadium from the Football Association.
FA chief Martin Glenn said the deal fell through due to hostility against the Fulham FC owner’s offer.
He revealed: “At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is seen as more divisive than was anticipated.”
The FA Council had been due to vote on Mr Khan’s bid next week.
Critics warned it threatened Wembley’s status as the home of English football, as it would be forced to compete with the NFL.
The new stadium opened in 2007 and cost about £750million to build.
