May calls on EU to get tough on cyber attackers

-

PM THERESA May will today urge EU chiefs to beef up sanctions to crack down on cyber attackers.

She wants states such as Russia and North Korea punished for online hacks in the same way they would be sanctioned for chemical attacks.

Speaking in Brussels, she will say: “As well as protecting ourselves against attack, we must impose Leo Varadkar proportionate consequences on those who would do us harm.

“We should accelerate work on EU restrictive measures to respond to and deter cyber attacks, including a robust sanctions regime.”

The head of Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre Ciaran Martin has warned of cyber attacks that kill.

And as EU leaders thrash out plans Angela Merkel to boost internal security, Mrs May will say: “These activities have real-life consequences for the security and prosperity of our nations.

“I strongly believe malicious actors too must face the real consequences of their actions. The UK stands ready to share its experience of work on cyber attacks to support the development of an effective regime.”
