Fish oil ‘can slow spread of cancer’
EATING a diet rich in fatty fish oils can slow down aggressive forms of breast cancer, research suggests.
Two groups of female mice in a medical trial were fed a diet of either omega-6 plant oils or omega-3 fish oils, then injected with breast cancer cells.
Autopsies later showed the cancer was less likely to develop in the rodents on the omega 3 diet.
Study co-author Saraswoti Khadge, of University of Nebraska Medical Centre, US, said: “Our study emphasises the potential therapeutic role of dietary omega-3.”
A separate study at Tufts University, US, found elderly people eating oily fish were 24% less likely to get agerelated illnesses like dementia, heart disease and cancer.
