Prisons are destroyed

■ We are all aware that the NHS, police and schools have been severely damaged by this particularly cruel Conservative Government, but the prison service has been practically destroyed.

Around 7,000 prison officers’ jobs have been cut since 2010, many of them the higher earners and those with the most experience. These were the staff who taught new officers the jail craft needed to manage an often violent inmate population.

Replacing them with raw recruits, many barely out of school, and expecting them to work to the same standard shows how little this Government knows about prisons but, more importantly, how little they care. Prisoners have been quick to take advantage with the result our prisons are now extremely dangerous. Andrew Miller, Doncaster
