Journalist Khashoggi ‘dismembered alive’ inside the Istanbul consulate
THE doctor alleged to have dismembered journalist Jamal Khashoggi alive learned his pathology skills in Britain.
Dr Salah Muhammad al-Tubaigy is said to have listened to music on headphones to drown the screams of Khashoggi, 59, as he killed him in the Saudi consulate in Turkey.
The New York Times named al-Tubaigy, who got a masters in forensic pathology from Glasgow University in 2004, as one of 15 Saudi hitmen.
Reports in the Turkish press claimed al-Tubaigy used his expertise to administer drugs to keep the journalist conscious as he was being tortured.
The alleged killing on October 2 was reportedly recorded and a source said Saudi Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi is heard telling the killers “do it somewhere else outside or I will be in trouble”.
It was also reported that Tubaigy can be heard telling others in the squad: “When I do this job, I listen to music. You should do too.”
Police in Istanbul have found “certain evidence” that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate.
Turkish officials referenced the recording and said the evidence had been shared with other countries, including Saudi Arabia and the US.
Khashoggi, a fierce critic of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammad bin Salman, contributed to the Washington Post. Asked if the US would now walk away from Saudi Arabia, US President Donald Trump said: “I do not want to do that.”
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and his G7 counterparts yesterday said they were “very troubled” by the atrocity.
Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi suddenly left Turkey on a commercial flight on Tuesday, hours before his residence was searched.
The New York Times has also named Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb as a suspect. He was pictured at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on October 2.
