Journalist’s body ‘was wrapped in carpet after Saudis’ hit’
Regime: It was rogue op
SAUDI journalist Jamal Khashoggi was wrapped in a carpet after dying in a chokehold, it was claimed last night.
He died at Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate before a local “co-operator” reportedly disposed of the body. Saudi officials insisted yesterday he died in a fistfight after arriving to collect divorce papers. Previously they had denied all knowledge of his disappearance after he entered the consulate on October 2. Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister told US media the killing had been a “rogue operation”. Adel al-Jubeir told Fox News: “They made a mistake and they have tried to cover up for it.” The UK, France and Germany demanded an urgent clarification, saying: “Nothing can justify this killing. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms.” Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab effectively accused the regime of lying but said the UK will maintain links. Asked if he believed the Saudi explanation, he told the BBC: “No, I don’t think it’s credible.” Turkish government sources said a hit squad from Riyadh killed the Washington Post columnist. President Donald Trump said halting arms deals would “hurt us more than them”. VICTIM Jamal Khashoggi
