The 12lb lunar lump is known as The Moon Puzzle as it is made up of six fragments which can be pieced together like a jigsaw. The largest fragment weighs more than 6lb and is 7in by 5in in size.

Found last year in the Sahara desert in a remote part of Mauritania, it is one of the largest meteorites ever to go on sale.

It was snapped up at auction by the Tam Chuc Pagoda tourism and educational centre in Vietnam where it will go on display to the public.

Meteorite expert Geoff Notkin, said: “Few, if any, of the world’s top museums have a lunar meteorite that is anywhere near this in size and uniqueness.”
