SIR ALEX FERGUSON’S hopes of a lifetime job at Manchester United were seemingly shattered by chairman Martin Edwards.

The manager was planning to move upstairs at the end of his dug-out days. But his dream of a behind-the-scenes role were undermined in a statement by Edwards in which he suggested Fergie should severe his ties with the club when his time as boss ends.
