LIONS CALL PUT DUNK ON A HIGH

- BY SIMON BIRD

LEWIS DUNK credits his England call-up for taking his game to a new level.

The Brighton defender was brilliant in keeping Newcastle at bay in Albion’s first away win in the league in 18 attempts.

Toon had 68% possession, 27 shots and 10 corners, but Dunk and centre-back partner Shane Duffy were immense.

He said: “That was probably my best performance of the season. I just have to keep putting performances in like that every weekend and you never know, hopefully I’ll be in the next England squad. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“Being in the squad last time was a great experience. It was the proudest moment I’ve had in football and hopefully there is more of it to come.

“It’s England, one of the greatest nations in football.

“You’ve got to come away from that with confidence and you learn from the players there. It’s something I can use to my benefit.”

He believes Albion can now kick on, adding: “I wouldn’t say I enjoy being as busy as that but obviously that’s my job. Me and the big man next to me will do it all day long if we have to.”

“The stature of this club can be massive. Last year was a good season but we can make this one even better.”

Seagulls striker Glenn Murray is out of hospital after being taken off on a stretcher while wearing an oxygen mask (below) following a clash of heads with Toon defender Federico Fernandez. Boss Chris Hughton (above) said: “Everything’s fine, so it will just be a question of recovering.”
