PM RULES OUT PEOPLE’S VOTE
May ignores protesters’ plea
THERESA May last night rejected demands for a second EU referendum, despite 700,000 campaigners calling for a “people’s vote”.
The PM shot down the idea 48 hours after protesters marched in Central London.
Despite MPs on all sides increasingly calling for a vote on any final deal, Mrs May told Commons yesterday: “Serving our national interest will demand that we hold our nerve through these last stages of the negotiations.
“It will mean not giving in to those who want to stop Brexit with a politicians’ vote – politicians telling the people they got it wrong the first time and should try again.” The PM also suggested that the Brexit transition period could be lengthened till as far as 2022.
Last week, Mrs May said any extension would last for a “few months” after the December 2020 deadline. But last night, she said: “A short extension to the implementation period would mean only one set of changes for businesses.
“But we would have to be out of this implementation period well before the end of this Parliament.”
This Parliament is due to run until May 2022.
Any extension would be in lieu of a backstop over the Irish border, she added.
EITHER Theresa May is in denial or dangerously clueless when she asserts she’s 95% of the way to a Brexit deal.
Under attack from all sides and running out of road, either she comes up with fresh thinking fast or she’ll be history.
