OAP scooter crash injuries have doubled
A RECORD number of pedestrians were knocked down and injured down by mobility scooters last year.
There are thought to be more than 300,000 of the battery-powered buggies on our streets.
Injuries have more than doubled over the past five years, with 52 pedestrians hurt after being hit in 2017, according to the Department for Transport.
Owners do not need a licence, insurance or even an eye test to drive them, some of which do 8mph and are allowed on roads.
A spokesman for the British Healthcare Trades Association said many accidents are due to lack of user training and old age.
He said: “Many users are in their later years and their reaction times will slow as the years go by.”
