Costa del Sol disaster alert after floods
PARTS of Malaga are expected to be declared disaster zones after fierce flash floods that claimed the life of a firefighter.
A military emergency response unit was scrambled on Sunday as people had to be rescued by helicopter after torrential rain.
The Costa del Sol resort of Estepona – where around 2,000 were trapped on a residential estate after a road washed away – was one of the worst-hit areas.
Jose Gil Gutierrez, 47, died when the fire engine he was driving overturned during a rescue mission and ended up in a swollen river. His crew said they are “broken in pain”.
The intense rain came less than two weeks after devastating floods left 13 people, including two Brits, dead in Majorca.
