This is the oh-so-satisfying stretching which involves your whole body that you do when you wake up. If we want to be scientific about it there are three parts of pandiculat­ion: the voluntary contractio­n of the muscles, a slow lengthenin­g and complete relaxation. This action, much like a pleasant yawn, re-sets both muscle length and function at the brain level. It “reminds” our muscles that they don’t have to stay stuck in a contracted state.
