Juventus star comes back to haunt Old Trafford as Mourinho is handed another home humbling in Europe

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

CRISTIANO RONALDO returned to Manchester United to pile fresh misery on Jose Mourinho.

Ronaldo, who spent six years at Old Trafford before his glittering spell with Real Madrid, set up the decisive goal for Juventus.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was given a hero’s reception as he left the pitch at the end and showed his class by taking a selfie with a fan who had raced on to the pitch to embrace him.

United were outplayed in the first half but raised their game in the second, although the gulf in class between the team 10th in the Premier League and the

Serie A leaders proved too much to bridge.

Paulo Dybala scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute, although United were indebted to keeper David De Gea for a string of fine saves which kept them in the game.

The Reds’ lack of cutting edge in the final third cost them the chance of getting anything from the tie, leaving them on four points from three group games.

Mourinho’s night began in farcical fashion, with the United boss abandoning the team bus which was stuck in heavy traffic, and walking the half mile to Old Trafford.

His evening did not get any better as he watched his side for most of the game given a lesson by Juve – beaten finalists in two of the last four seasons – and again suffer at home. Ronaldo did not get on the scoresheet, but he and his teammates did enough to land a big blow to United’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the competition.
