Alcohol death student tried to ‘run away’ from initiation

A STUDENT was “trying to run away” at an initiation ceremony before he collapsed and died from alcohol poisoning, an inquest heard yesterday.

Ed Farmer, 20, was “shaking” with fear as he lined up with 20 freshers at the Newcastle University Agricultural Society ritual.

Witnesses said first years drank up to 27 vodka shots, some through a funnel from a pig’s head. Friend Edward Hinch, 21, described how Ed “panicked” after the bar crawl before he was taken to a house. Next morning Edward told friends Ed was “terrified and trying to run away”, unaware he was in hospital, the hearing at Newcastle civic centre has been told. The inquest continues.
