11,000 drive legally with licence 12pts

SOME 10,964 drivers with the 12 licence points that would usually lead to a ban are still driving.

And the biggest points total – 54 – is held by an unnamed man of 44 from near Wolverhamp­ton, DVLA data reveals.

Figures up to July show 254 drivers have 20 points, and 30 have at least 30.

Charity Brake called for an end to the rule that lets drivers escape a ban by claiming they face “exceptiona­l hardship”.

It called it a “dangerous loophole”, adding: “The Government and courts are complicit in increasing risk to the public.”
