Antibiotic link to gut illness

TAKING antibiotic­s has been linked to bowel diseases in a study.

The drugs destroy beneficial gut bacteria, harming our immune response to salmonella and E.coli, said scientists who tested mice.

But Dr Elizabeth Mann said patients should not stop taking antibiotic­s as “most people need a genetic predisposi­tion” to get the diseases, .

Her team at Manchester University also said taking extra fibre could fight the effect of the drugs.
