SCANDAL Sajid Javid SAJID Javid has apologised for forcing Gurkha families to take DNA tests when applying for UK residency.

The Home Office also made relatives of Afghan nationals who worked for the British Armed Forces take the checks.

Mr Javid said: “I want to take this opportunity to apologise to those who have been affected.” Hundreds of people had to take tests or be refused permission to settle in the UK under “unclear or wrong” guidance.

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said MPs would be shocked those affected had risked lives “to keep this country safe”.

The revelation prompted fresh attacks on the “nasty culture” in the Home Office after the Windrush scandal, which involved people being wrongly deported. It fuelled worries about its ability to cope with more than three million EU citizens after Brexit.

So far 11 people are thought to have been refused entry for not providing DNA evidence.

But Home Secretary Mr Javid said: “One case is too many.”

Yvette Cooper, of the Home Affairs Select Committee said it was “deeply troubling”.
