Gene results aid tiger fight
EFFORTS to stop tigers going extinct have been boosted by confirmation that there are six subspecies still living in the wild.
Experts were at odds on remaining types but geneticists discovered Bengal, Amur, South China, Sumatran, Indochinese and Malayan tigers still roam.
Dr Shu-Jin Luo, of Peking University, said: “The lack of consensus over subspecies has hindered the effort to recover the species.”
Fewer than 4,000 tigers are left in the wild.
