See austerity in black and white
I recently came across a black and white photograph of a man sitting on the edge of a bed in a dark room. Something about it made me want to know more.
This was how I came across the work of Jim Mortram, and what I found is some of the most powerful, shocking and moving work I’ve ever seen.
Jim has been a carer looking after his disabled mother for more than 20 years in his small hometown in Norfolk. For the past decade he has “witnessed, photographed and documented the testimony of those that have suffered and endured the shock waves resulting from the chosen policy of austerity”.
His pictures are full of a stark dignity and the stories leave me speechless.
He says: “There is no ‘Great’ in Great Britain when the helpless are more than forsaken, they are punished.”
You can find what he calls his “act of resistance” at smalltowninertia.co.uk and jamortram.co.uk.
