This quietly devastating coming-of age drama sees Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie play an army veteran and his teenage daughter.
They’re living a survivalist lifestyle in a US national park when the pair are taken into care by the authorities, and are forced to examine their life choices.
Director Debra Granik’s script touches lightly on drug abuse, capitalism and environmentalism, but always with the central relationship in the foreground.
She previously directed megastar Jennifer Lawrence to her first Oscar nomination in 2010 breakout hit Winter’s Bone, and McKenzie’s marvellously guileless performance is definitely worthy of awards consideration.
