Super Mario Party

- BY JAMES IDE

£44.99, Nintendo Switch ★★★

Mario Party is a digital board game featuring mini games in which you and several of your friends face off against each other.

You all take turns rolling dice to traverse the board, with the goal of collecting stars and coins. Coins can be used to buy power-ups, pay other characters on the board, and to buy those allimportant stars.

But much like Mario Kart, there are power-ups that can give you modifiers to your dice rolls or the ability to steal opponents’ coins. There are also challenges along the way, so even if you feel secure in your victory, it can be snatched away.

While I really enjoyed the mini games, it often felt like winning them didn’t really correlate to any success in the overall board game. I would often have more coins than I would know what to do with but no stars, allies or power-ups.

One other odd thing is the random rewarding of stars at the end – I wanted to turn that option off.
