Brazil poll on a knife-edge

BRAZIL is today awaiting the results of the most bitter election contest in decades, with right winger Jair Bolsonaro tipped to become president.

Bolsonaro won the first round vote three weeks ago against leftist rival Fernando Haddad, whose Workers Party has been hit by corruption scandals.

But Haddad cut Bolsonaro’s lead from 12 to eight points in five days. It is feared Bolsonaro will trample on human rights and freedom of speech.
