Hero gran uses TV crash scene first aid to help stabbing victim
A WOMAN copied a procedure she saw on Corrie to save a man who had been stabbed in the chest.
Gillian Edmondson, 57, remembered seeing the Street’s character Dr Ali showing Michelle Connor how to help her son Ryan after a car crash, by applying pressure to a wound until medics arrived.
Gillian saw the victim she knew as Michael Parkinson, a man in his 50s, in distress on Friday and waited 25 minutes with him.
She said: “I saw him staggering. I saw him fall to the floor.
“I realised he’d been stabbed. He was talking, saying he couldn’t breathe.
“I just put pressure on the wound. My arm was sore with having to apply pressure as long as I did. He was in and out of consciousness.”
The man was taken to hospital, where his condition was described as serious, but stable. It is thought Gillian’s swift action saved his life. She said: “I was a bit shocked, it was just adrenaline. “Do you know where I got it? I got it off Coronation Street.”
In the scene earlier this month, Dr Ali played by James Burrows, and Michelle (Kym Marsh) help Ryan (Ben Thompson) after he is run over by Ronan (Alan McKenna). Gran Gillian said: “Kym Marsh’s son had been hit by a car and pressure was applied to stop the bleeding.” Gillian and her husband had been on their way to buy a lottery ticket in Carnforth, Lancs, at around 4pm, when she stepped in to help the stricken man. She said his son Joshua had later told her: “You’ve saved my dad’s life.” Police are investigating and want to trace a 36-year-old woman in connection with the attack.
