Don Revie told Emlyn

Hughes he would continue as skipper.

Revie said: “Emlyn has the qualities required for leading England.

“He is a brave lad and a marvellous competitor. His enthusiasm is infectious and will rub off on other players.”

Fiery Liverpool star Hughes – first picked as captain by caretaker boss Joe Mercer – was floored in a bust-up against Argentina. Revie added: “I expect him to be sensible on and off the pitch. I will have a word with him.”
