A crowd of excited children in Caversham, Berkshire, peer through a store window at a pile of very large fireworks in the run up to November 5. Today the sale of fireworks is strictly regulated and there are organised displays to go to – but then, in the days before health and safety, youngsters could walk into a shop and buy them. And, astonishingly, until 1959 it was illegal NOT to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night in the UK.
