BROUGH AND READY WAKEY

- BY GARETH WALKER

Increasingly a fixture on the celebrity scene, and the most recognisable F1 superstar since Schumacher won five consecutive championships with Ferrari at the turn of the century, Hamilton met his nemesis in the form of his old karting team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Although the Brit claimed his second and third championships in 2014 and 2015, Rosberg became the only man to beat him over a meaningful season. And, perhaps fearing he may never be able to reach such lofty heights again, the German retired just days after his 2016 triumph.

Hamilton’s revenge came against another German. Vettel ditched Red Bull for the allure of Ferrari. Their battle was billed as a mouth-watering cocktail of the two most decorated drivers of their generation going head-to-head, but it was Hamilton who had more ice in his glass.

Just as in Mexico in 2017, the Briton, aged 33 and two decades after he signed for McLaren, claimed the title again on Sunday.

Earlier this year, he signed a contract to become F1’s first £40m-aseason driver, staying at Mercedes until 2020.

And suddenly, Schumacher’s haul of seven titles is now firmly in sight on a journey that has broken records and barriers in equal measure. HUDDERSFIELD half-back Danny Brough is close to a return to Wakefield as part of a merry-go-round of players in Super League.

Former Scotland skipper Brough (above), 35, was a Trinity junior and also spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the club.

Wakefield and the Giants have been in talks over the switch, which would see experienced full-back Scott Grix (right) move the other way.

Huddersfield have recruited Brough’s replacement at half-back in Australian Matt Frawley, who has signed a two-year deal after being released by Canterbury Bulldogs.

Giants coach Simon Woolford said: “He’s still only young so he’s got some things to learn, but we feel we can mould him into our team nicely and he will do a really good job. PREMIER LEAGUE

Frawley’s arrival could mean utility Jordan Rankin is also set to depart, with a host of other clubs still looking to recruit in one of the busiest off-season transfer markets in recent memory.

Salford expect to complete deals for props Gil Dudson and Adam Walker, plus winger Ken Sio, while newly-promoted London Broncos have signed Leigh front-rower Nathan Mason and retained French hooker Eloi Pelissier. Leeds, Warrington and Hull KR are actively looking for further recruits, with the Rhinos being strongly linked with a move for experienced Aussie backrower Trent Merrin.
