Town hall leaders and motoring organisations welcomed the £30billion package for roads, but warned it did not go far enough.

It includes £420million to tackle potholes, bridge repairs and other minor road works.

Darren Shirley, of Campaign for Better Transport, said: “With a £9billion backlog, this will do little to address the years of neglect.”
