Hospital bug risks

■ It is hardly surprising that there is a surge of superbugs in hospitals when you see staff wearing their scrubs to and from the hospital. I was recently at a McDonald’s and was horrified to see at least six members of staff having lunch there dressed in work clothes.

I can remember when bed frames and every item of furniture was wiped over every day with antiseptic ‘damp dusting’, visitors weren’t allowed to sit on patients’ beds, and so on.

■ I agree with reader Julie Bradford who asks why we celebrate Halloween in this country, while St George’s Day is ignored (Your Voice, October 30)? This is something else that’s come over from America and is just a massive commercial opportunit­y for shops.

When I was young we made lanterns from hollowed-out turnips and that was it. Now it’s all trick or treating and spending a fortune. Debbie Marsh Chingford
