Stick to free TV licences vow, PM told
TARGETED Elderly viewer THERESA May was last night urged to guarantee free TV licences for the over-75s or risk breaking an election pledge.
The 2017 Tory manifesto promised to keep benefits including free bus passes, eye tests, prescriptions and TV licences for the duration of this Parliament.
But the BBC has put the £720million annual commitment in doubt after the Government’s contribution to free licences is ended by 2020.
Shadow Culture Secretary and Labour deputy leader Tom Watson has written to the PM urging her to reassure over-75s.
He warns: “Many will rightly feel a sense of betrayal that the promise to maintain their benefit stands to be broken.”
