1997: Former Rangers and Liverpool boss Graeme Souness was appointed manager of Portuguese giants Benfica (above). He stayed at the club for less than two years.
2004: Berti Vogts resigned as Scotland manager after a two and a half years in charge.
2006: Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years by a doping tribunal after testing positive for nandrolone during the ICC Champions Trophy.
