Superfit Bill, 73, ready for 155-mile desert marathon

BRITAIN’S fittest pensioner, who ran 18 marathons last year at the age of 73, is now planning to run across Chile’s daunting Atacama Desert.

Grandad Bill Mitchell only began running 10 years ago but says he is now fitter than ever.

The former merchant Navy officer and fitness fanatic, from Turnditch, Derbyshire, has already run the gruelling

Bill, who has competed in a total 157 marathons and 23 ultra-marathons and puts his success down to scoffing wine gums, said: “A lot of people resign themselves to old age. I always say to people you’re never too old.

“I want to try and do tougher races. I’m looking at a highaltitu­de marathon across the Atacama as well as one in the Arctic circle.”
