Woman brought to book over street library

-

A WOMAN who set up a tiny community library has been told by her local council to take it down because she did not seek planning permission.

Susan Thomas, 56, built the library, which holds 100 books, a month ago for neighbours to enjoy. Her husband David, 57, fashioned it from an old bedside table and painted it green so that it would blend with its surroundings.

But Wakefield council has demanded that the 4ft by 3ft box be removed.

Susan, 56, said: “I’ve been delighted with its popularity, lots of people have been using it. We need to adopt a common sense approach to this, which would mean allowing it to remain.”

More than 1,000 neighbours have signed a petition calling for the box to stay in place.

The council said it has suggested “alternative” locations as it is on council land.
