Pay up, Tories

-

TUC leader Frances O’Grady’s attack on a Theresa May “conning” millions of lowpaid workers reflects growing anger at squeezed wages and living standards.

Nobody could live on the legal minimum wage of £7.83 an hour for workers aged 25 and over or the £8.21 when it is increased in April. So the Government calling it a “living wage” adds calculated insult to financial injury.

When he was Chancellor, George Osborne seemed to think he could abolish low pay by spinning it away. He didn’t and couldn’t. The Prime Minister should drop the pretence of her former colleague and adversary.

Labour promises at least £10 an hour. The Tories need to match the policy.
