1.7kg oyster UK’s biggest

‘BEAST’ The giant oyster AN oyster weighing 1.7kg is thought to be the biggest ever found in our waters.

The 29cm by 12cm specimen from Richard Hayward’s oyster beds at Mersea Island, Essex, could also be 20 years old.

Son Tom said: “It’s 10 times bigger than our average. It is a beast.”

The mollusc will be left to keep growing and hopefully set a new world record. The current holder, at 35.5cm by 10.7cm, was found in Denmark in 2013.
