Show we’re better than this

-

THE letters I get every week on UC at the Real Britain column could break a heart of stone. You think you’ve seen them all and then along comes another, sad enough to bring tears to your eyes.

A girl of nine ringing a charity to ask for work. Offering to clean floors and make beds because her HGV driver dad, penniless while his UC claim passed through the dreaded “five-week wait”, taught her it’s good to work.

This has gone far enough. Shame on Theresa May and Esther McVey, and every heartless last one of them. What will it take to stop this hated benefit? More destitution? More deaths? A tented city of claimants? A nine-year-old girl desperate to give her siblings a Christmas this year?

Burning injustice doesn’t even begin to cover it. We don’t live in Victorian Britain. It’s 2019 and we are better than this.

Thank God for places like Humanity Torbay and everyone else who refuses to walk by on the other side of the road.

Let’s all send this little girl enough love and support that she and her family have the best Christmas they’ve ever had. And let’s all ask Santa to end UC right now.
