COFFEE giants have packed festive drinks with so much sugar a single drink can contain two days’ allowance.

The worst offender is Caffe Nero’s Belgian Truffle Hot Chocolate, which contains 56.9g – nearly 14 teaspoons.

The NHS recommends a daily limit of 30g, or seven teaspoons, for anyone aged over 11.

Caffe Nero is also second on the list with its Winter Spiced Hot Chocolate, which has 51.6g.

And Pret a Manger's Orange Hot Chocolate comes third with 50.5g of sugar. Costa’s Hazelnut Praline Hot Chocolate has 38.9g.

Caz Paton of shopping compar- ison site Onbuy.com, which did the research, said: “Most people don’t think about the nutritional value of their hot drink.

“And although having one of these drinks once in a while is fine, having them daily might not be a wise choice for your health.”

The British Dental Association added: “These coffeehouse chains should be weaning us off our addiction to sugar instead of developing drinks that far exceed the maximum daily dose. Consuming large quantities of sugar not only fuels tooth decay but has contributed to Britain being the fattest nation in Western Europe.”

Caffe Nero was contacted for comment.
