Over-40s could face new social care tax

-

WORKERS aged over 40 face a tax to fund social care, it emerged yesterday.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is mulling plans for a levy to plug the funding black hole.

He has admitted he is “attracted to” a cross-party proposal for the compulsory premium. The plan, outlined by two Commons Select Committees, is based on a system in Germany in which workers over 40 give 2.5% of income to a pot ring-fenced for social care. Mr Hancock said: “This is a problem which can only be solved by people coming together.”

It comes after a poll for the Daily Mirror found more than half of Brits were willing to pay more to fund care.
