On last night’s telly

-

TDynasties, BBC1 ★★★★ his may sound like sacrilege but I think the BBC could have got a tastier narrator in for this opening episode of David Attenborough’s latest epic.

As the males in a troop of Senegalese chimpanzees had a dust-up over mating rights, I would have loved to have heard Danny Dyer on co-commentary.

That wasn’t the only soap link either. The expert advising the film crew even admitted chimp life was almost like a soap opera.

Plus, as alpha male David and brother-in-arms KL stomped around showing who was boss it was hard not to think of Phil and Grant Mitchell – but to be fair to David and KL they didn’t grunt as much as the Mitchell brothers.

One thing Dynasties doesn’t have in common with regular soap output is each episode has just one family and storyline.

That shouldn’t harm its ratings but if you weren’t that interested in chimps you may have been hankering after some of the variety of Attenborough’s previous shows.

Speaking of previous triumphs, nothing quite matched Planet Earth II’s heart-stopping snakes versus iguana chase.

I also felt let down when David – licking his wounds after being jumped by the younger males in the night – returned and reasserted his authority without even having to lace up his gloves.

I mean, if I wanted to watch a load of toothless underlings meekly deferring to an ageing dictator clearly past his best I’d just flick over to The X Factor.
