■ HAVING seen the banned orangutan-friendly Iceland advert on my laptop, I feel advertising watchdog Clearcast is inadvertently protecting the producers of palm oil and denying the public the right to make up their own minds.

It cannot be right to kill off orangutans for pure greed. I am sure the public would be much less willing to buy products containing palm oil if they were made aware of the danger its production causes to wildlife and the rainforests.

If people boycotted palm oil products the manufacturers would have to replace it with something else. Greed will always win unless we, the public, become more aware and selective about what we buy. Paul Tilbury, Barnstaple, Devon

■ Iceland should be applauded for making this advert which shows how rainforests are being destroyed for the production of palm oil. If something isn’t done our beautiful orangutans could become extinct.

If more people were aware of what is happening then the manufacturers would have to do something. This advert should not be banned, but hopefully it will get people talking. More companies should follow Iceland and stop using palm oil.

C Edmonds Nuneaton, Warks

■ Good for Iceland for making this Christmas advert and removing palm oil from its own products. It’s a disgrace that Clearcast have banned it from being shown on TV because it’s not political, it is about saving our precious wildlife.

People need to know what’s going on in the world so they can make informed decisions.

I also think it should be shown in schools to educate our children about the danger these beautiful creatures are in. At the end of the day, this is all because of corporate greed.

Angela Newman, South London

■ The Body Shop has been campaigning for over 10 years to ban palm oil. Orangutans could become extinct in the not-toodistant future because of corporate greed. It’s as simple as that. But you can’t blame people trying to make a living in a developing country. Louise Honeywell, Slough, Berks

■ Well done, Iceland, for spreading the word about palm oil and shame on watchdog Clearcast for banning the advertisement highlighting the peril of the orangutans. Moira Ward Fareham, Hants

■ Well done to Iceland for sending a powerful message with this advert. It should be seen on TV. The truth hurts, but it doesn’t half make you think.
