This is my grandfather, Captain Robert Bryant, pictured on Christmas Day 1945 in Burma. Born in South Wales in 1904, he joined the Army aged 16 and was stationed in India in 1926. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was seconded to the Burmese Army and was in Rangoon when the Japanese invaded.

He survived the longest retreat in British military history to the northern borders of India, later becoming commandant of a Japanese PoW camp where this picture was taken. He returned to the UK in 1947. James Bryant, Bristol
